How do I decorate for Christmas in a rental home?

Same way you decorate anywhere else! If you want to hang things on the wall, use command hooks. Typically I don't hang things on the wall, but if I do, I just use the hook from whatever piece of art was taken down to put up the holiday decor. One year I wrapped all the pictures on the wall in holiday gift wrap. Looked kinda cute.
Just as Naomie said, being a renter shouldn't limit your decorating options. Use over the door hangers to hang wreaths, and put decorations atop surfaces around the house (ie windowsills, bookcases, mantels, tables, counters, etc.).
