They sell christmas lights now with a small battery box attached. You don't need an outlet. The only thing is I've never seen them sold in a large quantity of lights so you would have to purchase a lot of sets if you are looking to decorate a larger area. You can also do a quick search for solar powered lights. I'm starting to see those coming out on the market too.
Other than that, my only suggestion would be to take an outdoor extension cord and conceal it under your door so you plug it indoors - perhaps if you have an outlet near the front door?? Not sure that would work but just thinking out loud. :)
We just used extension cords until husband added outlet
The battery ones would work and if you can find the ones that even include a timer or remote then you solve the problem of having to remember to turn them off.
