Well I would say that it is rare that living spaces have a "designer" look with home crafted items unless the home owner is a talented artist/crafter. Blue and white china is an eternal display item and you can't go wrong if you start a collection of such pieces.
First you need to know your style. Look at magazines and designer websites. Look at the items that are the major statement pieces that make up the style. Are they metallic, rustic, etc. Paint can easily and inexpensively give a metallic look to just about anything. Wood is the answer for rustic. Choosing a color pallet is also a great way to make choices. Are you drawn to jewel tones or light colors? Decisions, decisions, decisions.
