If you want to draw attention to it, you could paint the casing around it, or put nice moulding to make it look like a picture frame. You could add a stone sill, or extend it (width and depth) into a little bar.
I personally wouldn't decorate the opening, since the background is visible. It would look like decorations on a busy wall paper IMO. You could however if your really want one, use one big item like a wide shallow planter, or one big candle or bowl of fruit.
I had a similar pass through from kitchen to family room. I did not like the kitchen light disturbing my tv watching time when someone would go for a snack or a beverage. I also wanted the tv room to be movie theatre dark whenever it was movie time. I actually installed gorgeous velvet curtains on both sides of the wall with easy tie back hooks. The curtains were then 2 seconds away from open or closed and the materials were unexpected. I suppose it also depends on the purpose of your decorating that area. If it is defining the spaces separately, then curtains would work. If it is just a simple vignette you want to create, then possibly a potted orchid, a battery operated flicker candle set to come on and go off at the same time each evening and a pretty chotchkee of some sort. Maybe place the orchid on a small stack of decorative old books. Or lastly, perhaps you could expand the area for added storage by installing some shelves between the side walls (you can get pre-finished boards in the millwork section or home improvement stores in varying widths – they will even cut them to length for you). Place the selves at whatever heights you desire. Use them as teapot teacup displays, line them with decorative books or cook books (depending on how wide it is – looks like maybe 6 – 8 inches?). Maybe a collection of rainbow glass vases, bottles and urns? If you are a wino like me (and I spell that wineaux because its French and its classy that way) Do a wine glass collection and some empty bottles with led lights in them. That way the glasses are always at the ready! Install swinging leaded glass cabinet doors or shutters to width or hang a stained glass panel from the top. A little bigger in scope – how about installing a breakfast bar! On the cheap or rental property option, a tension rod wrapped in twigs or branches and hang herb bouquets from it – or – use the tension rods to display pretty vintage kitchen towels that you would never use or pretty modern dish towels that are meant to use (double duty on that one…it empties a towel drawer in the kitchen). Or use clothes pins to hang pictures on skinny wires. Design possibilities are endless really – just have fun. If budget is a factor, start with what you already have for free. Set it up, look at it, change it as often as you wish until you love it.
Sometimes the best solution is right in front of us, but since we have already stared at it for weeks, months or years we don't think of it. Just ask you girlfriends if they want any of your old clothes and you will see them wear it in a cute new way that makes you wonder "How did I not think of that?"
The best battery operated candles I have ever bought came from Target. They were more expensive per each than my Costco set, Pier One set or my Michael's candles, but they use normal AA bateries, not big old "D" batteries, don't eat batteries and the timers are really reliable and simple to "reset" by just flicking the timer off then on again for the 4 hour start time. I think they were ~ $12 each but they are now several years old and still work like the day I bought them. They are real wax (so not good for sunny locations) and also scented. They add all the ambiance and none of the risk of fire from a forgotten candle. I like how they are on when I walk in the door as though I have my very own housewife on duty making my home "homey" for my arrival after doing battle in the real world all day.
I could put something tall but with a smaller footprint on each side of the pass through. For a Christmas you could put two slim Christmas trees. I'm thinking of the kind with the wooden X base. These shouldn't take up too much of your counter space but will still give you interest in this space. Also, if there is room above the passthrough I would add some sort of sign. Signs are very trendy right now and there are so many cute ones out there. For Christmas you could find a cute seasonal one, then change it out after Christmas for a sign with a saying you love. I can't tell from the photo if the counter is wide enough for a couple of place settings, but if so that would look great there. If the space isn't large enough for that how about a pretty candy dish, fruit bowl, or even a Himalayan salt basket lamp? The lamp would add light and interest to the area.
