On the other end of the color wheel is blue so if I were you I would definitely paint the walls a light blue/gray, that should help balance the color of the carpet. They make big area rugs now that are pretty affordable, that should help too!

Obviously, couch on that left wall and TV on the right. Under the stairs: desk or reading nook? Treat the brown as a neutral... pick a color and accessorize with that... or items right next to it on the color wheel.

Your carpet just made my carpet look good....it’s a brown with a bit of cream in it. My realtor had me replace the carpet in the livingroom of my last house. Brown. It seams to be the go to color.

Take a visit to your local fabric store.... somewhere out there... there exists a fabric that has all the colors in it that you have in the room... use for draperies, pillows, cover a chair or two, cover a bench... how much of it you use... may depend on how much it is per yard... and your budget... $$$ make a pillow or two... or cover a canvas with it to make an art piece..$ cover a chair.... the right fabric will pull all the color elements together... you could even use several fabrics... just make sure they are all a different "scale" (tiny, small, medium, large... or pattern, flowers, geometric, all over like dots... etc)

Carpet seems to have a mauve tone in it. Consider that when picking complementary colors.

Brown and gray are fine together. Would suggest you need a pop of colour - maybe aqua/turquoise - toss cushions, in art work, and an accessory or two. I also use tall artificial plants to soften corners and add a natural element to rooms - no pun intended.

I would choose multicolored throw pillows or curtains that have the brown/grey/white and peach or pale teal and use the accent color or white on other décor in the room. For your wall color, the one you have is fine, or you might want to look at a soft greige.

Have you look into carpet dye? Some carpet cleaners do it. May be something to look into. I was told it is about $100 per average room.

Not sure if youi are renting.... even if yoiu are consider painting the walls . There are so many shades of white. Find one that looks good with your carpet and then work from there. I learned that the hard way. Landlords don't pay much attention to exact color. If yoiu need a cool white and you have a warm white it can make a huge difference. Staining the wood on the stairs wouldn't be a big job. Or, you could paint it white like the coffee table. On the far wall, I would place large floating shelves. Fill with knick knacks, photos, books etc that bring alll of your colors together. You could have a huge amount of storage under the stairs.
