Chipping chalkboard paint on jar lids

I recently painted chalkboard paint on the flat metal part of a mason jar lid. When I screw the tops on, the paint underneath on the flat metal part is chipping off. Is there any way to stop this other than not painting where the ring goes?

If you use several light coats of spray paint, you shouldn't need a primer or anything to help, the paint adhere. If you used actual paint, your coat may have been a bit thick and that can cause sticking on the jar ring.

The coats could have been too thick. I'll try the spray paint next. Thank you!

Did you use a primer prior to painting?

Hey, @Janet Pizaro. I agree that I could have used a primer, like you said, and will try that next time. The paint said it would work on metal, but I think I have learned from this experience that I should probably always use a primer!

Laura I have used both spray and brush on chalkboard but the spray is best for small items like lid inserts, 2 or 3 light coats and no primer needed. I use them all the time for storage and leftovers and I haven't had any chipping.

Maybe you just put the ring part of the lid on to soon. It takes paint 30 days to fully cure to its optimum hardness.

I didn't know that! This is the first thing I've ever painted, so I had no idea it took that long to cure! Thanks for the info!
