How do I decorate this large wall?

We have 12' ceilings in our family room and I'm having trouble decorating the wall where we have our TV. I don't want to mount the TV on the wall -- see the picture. It's sitting on a beautiful console table but there is a lot of empty wall on both sides as well as above.

Keep it like it is? Decorate around the tv? Any ideas? Cute side chair will replace the christmas tree in a week or so.
I am a big fan of art and you definitely have incredible wall space to indulge in something spectacular. Your room might benefit from some color. But also a bank of shelving would be nice, providing storage and display options. There are quite a few pieces that might coordinate with your existing media cabinet... take a look at Ballard Designs for some ideas? Also - since you do have all that height, you might consider putting your tree on a low table for the holiday season, adding some extra drama for the time that it is up. I like the teal touches with the pale seating.
I would add wallpaper, or a big piece of art.
depending on your taste there are beautiful throw blankets in different weights with beautiful prints you can make a simple frame with molding strips with the blanket stapled to the back of the frame, also spray paint cheap photo frames from goodwill or dollar store taking the glass out and hang them in different clusters have taller ones some hung tall or on the side use different sizes but i would use no more than 3 colors, 2 contrasting and 1 complementing colors

Hi your wall is perfect for what I call happy 😊 times family wall,you could add 3d decorative letters, stencils and your photos and arrange them to tell a story about the good times and good memories that you have. I'm doing something very similar but the wall in doing is a chimney breast in a bedroom. I will post pictures when I complete it. I hope this has helped you 😊.

I would divide the wall and on the top section (1/3, 1/2, or 2/3, your choice), I would put a mural of an outside setting such as a mountain view, skyline, or lake.(your choice). This would give the illusion of a window view which may be lacking in a basement area anyway. Don't know if that is something you would want to do yourself or hire it done.
This is my family room.
Your ceiling level is slanted to the left of the photo so with me being a bit anal when it comes to centering and balance I would center your wall starting where the ceiling dips to the right hand corner. Find yourself an awesome artificial fig tree or if you have great lighting, a real one, and place it between the light switch plate and the outlet plate. Now you have a section that is square-ish to work with. I like the idea that another poster posted about a blanket or decorative piece of usable art. Loving the teal piece you have your tv on I would find or make a wooden shelf the width of the console and center it above the tv 3/4 the way up the wall with rod hooks on the bottom of it to hang a rod iron (or rod iron looking) rod with interesting finials to drape your blanket over. If you find a blanket with the teal colour in it, even better, the teals and beige of your sofa would look amazing as an ascent piece. On top of the shelf you could ascent with teal pieces or pottery that mixes the various colours of your room. For a second idea you could leave the self empty and paint a beautiful quote above the shelf (or find one of those stick on wall decor stickers that many stores offer now). I do agree with another poster regarding your tree for next year, prop that baby up on a table to raise it higher so more can fit under it! lol You can always wrap empty boxes to fill in the space or cover the table in a beautiful teal, black and silver plaid table cloth! But, saying that, next year switch out the tree you will have on the left side for the Christmas tree, leaving the accent chair in the corner, or put the chair in front of the outlet on the left in place of what ever large light weight accent piece you put there! Is it possible to rearrange the furniture and put the couch on the wall where the TV is?
i don't think it's so much the ceiling height as that the tv console appears dwarfed on that big expanse of wall. If not, I think hanging art around this could get very busy looking. Maybe a large vertical piece to the left of the tv and an arrangement of 3 or 4
large plants where your Christmas tree is now. Best of luck!
I would not add anything to the wall. I would either get 2 tall skinny bookcases, paint them to match the console and put one on each side. Or instead of bookcases, get 2 ficus trees or other tall greenery - fake or real for on each side. The other thing I thought of since you are bringing in a side chair, put the chair where the television is and put the television on the wall to the right.
Do the entire wall in artificial stone.......Tall plants to finish if off..........the BLANK wall doesn't get it..........embellish it with greenery.
I had a very similar wall. I did a gallery wall, anchored by a huge clock on one end, then filled in the wall with items that made me smile. I got huge letters that spell HOME and anchored the opposite end. Filled in around everything with an assortment of things, let your imagination run wild. Try to look at things that you normally wouldn't see hanging on a wall. You can use family pictures, too. Your wall should represent your family, and that will be unique to you. I laid everything out on the floor and rearranged until I liked the layout, took a pic with my cell phone to refer back to as I worked. Everyone liked it so well, I was asked to do them for other friends and family.
Love your tables. Yes could you rearrange furniture? if not, I agree something tall to left if looking at tv. Maybe a metal ornamental item above tv. Just something simple. A person can get too much going on.
Okay I'm having trouble like another person commented, I'd have to place the TV and table centered by the ceiling line rather than the whole wall. Then, since it looks like you like simple , rather than busy, two tall narrow frames on either side of the TV and table. The frames can house anything, fabric, art (broad strokes of color, trees etc. or possibly wall paper even mirrors. Then you can go up as high as you want without clutter or looking like you have something out of proportion for those ceilings. The idea of the frames would be to connect the high empty wall space to the lower "filled" area without spending a lot. Another idea might be wall sconces . The light will fill some of the blank space and draw the eye .
When I see a wall like that with a TV on it, I think shelves and storage! Everyone can use more shelves. I would paint the shelves the same color as the TV stand or stain them the same color of your end tables. Then to tie it all in, put a piece of wood across the top, connecting the two shelves with L brackets. This will be like a bridge above the TV. If there is room, then add a piece of art below the bridge and above the TV. Of course paint or stain the wooden bridge to match the shelves/bookcases. (I am an interior decorator, by the way.) Have fun!
Why not try one of many beautiful wall sticker stencils that can just come off when you want, move the scenery around...i collected a lovely set of branches with some birds sitting in them, thus all you have to do is either use 'their' pic idea, or re-arrange on the floor first & see what & how you would like it to look...additionally you can get 3D birds, thus placing one or two around also looks amazing... then get creative & get some green felt & cut into leaves, add a few around with a childs non toxic glue(as it can come off without damage, just some warm water & salt),& there you have your own inside outside..
*Place some brown marking tape around for a window affect if wanting to be extra creative,& this tape comes off when you want without damaging anything... The whole project would cost under 20.dollars:))
Have a picture gallery. Hang a dozen or more pictures around and above the tv to make the area look like the tv is another picture then maybe put a comfortable chair in one corner to use for reading
I love gallery walls and I think that they work in one or two different ways. One is to decide on a frame color and style and purchase as many as needed in different sizes. Them position them on the floor (on brown paper) until you find the design you like. Mark the paper and then tape the paper to the wall to hang the frames. Fill the frames with things that make you happy - the frame being the same color will keep it together theme wise. Second is to do the same positioning on paper, but to develop a theme - home, family, etc. Then purchase items that match that theme - photos, letters, pre-done art and build your wall that way. You could even start with a piece of art you love and build the theme from colors in that... the possibilities are endless.

Turn it into a family photo gallery. You could even frame your children's grade school artwork and integrate those precious keepsakes into it.
I am a designer and decorator and I was stumped by the large wall in my new house I just bought 3 months ago. I did not want to junk it all up with hanging a bunch of stuff all over it so I decided on a made to measure wall mural. It's the rage and is strippable so it won't harm your walls and doesn't have to be permament.

An old salvaged 8 pane glass windowed door hung horizontally could become a photo gallery for you, placing it to the left center of the t.v.. To the right you might hang 3 large wall clocks of your choice at different heights. All will create an interesting wall but not a busy one. Try taping blank paper on the wall first for positioning before permanently adding the 'art work'. You have a wonderful opportunity to be creative and to make it your own. Best of luck.
Thanks to everyone for your great thoughts and ideas. I'm still undecided but leaning towards adding two tall shelving units on each side of the TV and then go from there.

We Painted ours black and hung the TV on it , we also painted the cupboards for the other components shiny black. It all comes together lovely.
I too had a large space over my TV that needed "something special" to fill the space. I painted the wall a contrasting color. I then hung two inch thick wood stained hanging shelves of varying lengths above and to the side of my TV. I placed framed art and other various items on the shelves; yes, even some photos. The space has been completely transformed.

Again, i too am a decorater & speciality crafts maker & agree with 'Hihunnula' about your wall..{My idea was pretty much the same, just with a couple of extra ideas.}.... & because all of these types of sticker decals that come off without harming walls you can have fun making your own look, or as said use a purchased look that you like... One can even pick up these decal stickers now from larger two dollar/or Savy craft shops....& no painting required.... though if you do wish to paint i would not go a dark colour, no:) ... Another fab idea is cheap but lovely flexible lace, meaure from top to bottom your pieces, add hat elastic to rushe, then cover the entire wall with just a cream/white shade. The look makes the room look as if you have a large window though with the look of lace gives enough decorating without adding anything else.. this does not have to be an expensive hard project either as hand sewing is all thats required,& the bottoms of curtians only need a neat staight cut(thus measuring the area & how many pieces needed after making a top slight gathering for the look..) also since being so light many plastic removable hangers can be found to make the hanging really easy. This type of look desires a lovely display table(not big) with a vase of much greenery & one colour flower/lilly,whatever is your preference,& it will always have an air of freshness.. *Flowers too expensive;arrange good looking ones that are fake & set the display with clear/white marbles in a glass designed vase, this then means they won't move around until you do it.. if you like that idea a tip, spray a layer of hairspray over your display to make dusting less & easier to do.

How big is your TV, you look like that wall could handle a 70 to 80 inch one. How about some book shelves that you connect together to appear as if built in and put trim across the top. Balance both sides and make that the height of that wall. Don't feel as though you have to put anything above although 1 or 3 large pieces of art or a large sculptures would be ok. It's just that if you start hanging a bunch of things up it distracts the TV. Do you want to do this or has someone asked you and now you feel like you "should" do something. Don't do it until you are sure of what you want. People will say "oh its just a hole try it and see you can just fix it if you don't like it" right but it's you who gets stuck so do only what you want.
Same problem. Our solution was to make a montage of favorite photos & art pieces -- all framed in black around the tv which has been mounted to the wall. You are always staring at the wall anyway, it should be seeing things that make you happy, when what is ON the tv is boring... It also helps to Paint the Wall a color that contrasts the art & tv -- like the bolder soft blue we used to make the sunrises & sunsets more dramatic. All so much more fun to look at!
I would hang an old distress painted ladder from the ceiling, to break up the vertical space. You could use the ladder to hang plants from, seasonal decorations, or create visual interest by stacking items on top of the ladder at varying heights.
You could paint it a different color. You could make a couple of large frames with molding and hang pictures in them or you could wallpaper that one wall. Good luck with your project.
I like that you kept it simple. I would do a tall bookshelf on the left of the tv. A pale nuetral color/ white or matching teal would be good. Since you already have a chair and lamp to the right, maybe hang a round decorative clock the size of a throw pillow or slightly larger. I would place this in the upper left corner of the chair.
Use 2 tall shutters, old bi-fold doors would work. Attach electric wall sconces a little ways from the top, running the wiring behind the shutter. Lean them against the wall or mount them on the wall flanking the TV and cabinet. Plug it in and light up the night.

the wall is flat, the ceiling line is what changes.
I would paint fake brick work around the curved doorway,then a tall fern, then a hutch that is taller with doors to close when you don't want the tv to be the focus point. Three framed ???
Above the hutch that extend just wider than the hutch, then a lower fern, wine rack? bookshelf? In the corner , about 3/4 of the hutch height. I like the European look can you tell?

I had a huge blank wall like that in a home once in our dinning room. We built square columns from the floor to the ceiling from plywood. In between the colunms we placed cabnets using top kitchen cabnets. I had grante cut for their tops but it can be done cheaper. Build a base for the cabinets with 2x4's. I covered the columns with paintable, textured wallpaper. Then in between the columns above the cabinets we put glass shelves. On the top shelf, wood with a molded edge and lighting to penetrate the glass shelves below. Also the top shelf was not built to reach the ceiling so we placed lighting on the top towards the ceiling. When we sold the house it was one of the things that attracted the buyer.

Put the TV somewhere else it is too small for this wall. I have a large framed mirror hung and large pictures hung on each side , with a nice console underneath the mirror. . you could also hang photos, large above the mirror. Good luck.
How about a Rustic, wooden wall and a LARGER t.v.?? Then go from there with accents.
It is a lot helpful if you know your style. Do you like country, Tuscan, shabby chice or maybe modern? That is the starting point. Is the room open concept to the rest of the living space Or is it a closed off area? I have to ask everyone who wants my opinion these questions before any suggestions can be given.
If I had to define a style, I'd say more Tuscan/modern. The TV in the picture is 55" and I'm not opposed to attaching it to the wall but I didn't want to do that because it will be semi-permanent once I get it hung and installed by an electrician, etc.
The room is open to the kitchen, which is behind and to the right of the family room.
How about a large mirror above t.v., scattered pictures, clock and a large plant, where the tree sets., If you have light? A large hangin' plant, if you have light, a window near by? Plants are the greatest accents and make your home even homier......artificial are a thought? Back to the corner, do you have a corner cabinet........I picked one up at a garage sale and fills in a corner perfect!
It took me a while to figure out what to do with this blank 16x8 wall. I finally decided to paint a cool geometric pattern to sort of "frame" a Banksy mural and a framed canvas. I really like the way it turned out.
It's also a good conversation starter!
