When I was in a rental, I decorated it just as if I owned it.
In most rentals, painting is not allowed, so you can do an accent wall with fabric applied with liquid starch.... you just re-wet to remove it. Some also use wall decals that just peel off.
When hanging pictures, use Command hooks if nails are not allowed. I have always hung my items with those tiny picture hook nails and filled the holes when I left.... this is particularly good if you find the complex painters and get a jar of their wall paint to save.
I always keep my decorating pretty contemporary as to me less is more.
Area rugs, throw pillows, flowers, colored glass on shelving adds nice color, lamps and shades can add color, design and interest. I also have quite a few Asian pieces like the big ceramic goldfish bowls on stands, ginger jar lamps, asian style bookcases that are good for displaying collections.
