Flush mount light covers?
Any ideas on how I can update my old ceiling lights to brighten a dark space without replacing the entire light fixture? They are odd size I think 14x 14, Can I just get new covers for them maybe plain glass to fit in the square outer part of them. Any suggestions would be great"

Without seeing them it's hard to tell if you could get new globes/covers. Take one to a lighting place to see if they have replacements in that size. Another solution may just be brighter bulbs.
Here are some additional ways to brighten the room:

Maybe you could put clearer glass up there, get it cut to size.
Try removing the glass first and painting the fixture with high heat paint in a bright color.
Clean the glass by soaking in vinegar to let more light pass through. You might be able to replace the bulbs with Edison bulbs and leave the cover off entirely.
Check your local home improvement or big box store, they usually have replacement shades. You can also check online. If it looks like it's easy to hang something else on the fixture, use the search bar at the top left as I've seen Hometalkers come up with great replacement ideas.
Plain glass will give you glare. Clean the glass. Try using LED bulbs in the lights. They use less energy and last longer than regular bulbs.
They make plastic covers for larger light fixtures at Home Depot that come in sheets of about 2' x 4'. You can cut them down to size, some are egg crate, some squares of semi-clear plastic and some opaque. I cut mine with a tile cutter but possible a circular saw will zip them to the size you want.
Home Depot and Lowes have plastic covers and sheets of Plastic. Another place you could check out would be Hobby Lobby.
Thanks
