I don't have headboards on any of my beds. Never had a problem with pillows getting wedged. Push the bed frame and mattress against the wall.
I don't have a headboard, because I don't have enough space. And I like it that way. Just add an extra pillow between the wall in the bed. So you don't lose your pillow every night.

I have the same window issue, so I don't have a headboard and we don't have an issue with the pillows at all. The bed even has a radiator behind it so it's not flush and still never lost a pillow.
Buy a suitable sized headboard rather than spoil the one you have.
