salt crystals from water supply store works great. Or water 2/3 & 1/3 rubbing alcoho...works great in spray bottle on stairs or windshield. -

Ashes from a wood or coal fire are excellent for ice. I also like non clumping cat litter. A bag of it is cheap, and easy to carry in the trunk of the car.
