How can I glass cut a wine bottle in half?

The string soaked in acetone and tide around the bottle, burn it with a candle does not word at all. I've heard of filling the bottle with oil up to where you want the cut to be, then put it over a gas flame until very hot and dip immediately in ice cold water. Will this work? Sounds a bit scary.
