How do I refurbish a plaster frame on a mirror?
I have a large mirror (100+ years old) that has a dull, dingy discolored plaster frame. I'd like to clean it and apply gold leaf. What is the best way to clean it so that the gold leaf will stick, but not damage the plaster which is otherwise in remarkably good shape? Also, what kind of adhesive would be best? Comments and suggestions are appreciated.

I would use window cleaner. They make gold leaf adhesive. In the gold leaf section of craft stores.
I would sprinkle baking soda on the frame. Use a soft paint brush and gently brush it into the frame then brush it out. here is special adhesive for applying gold leaf. Here are some examples of gold leafing from other Hometalkers.

Real gold leaf is applied with guilder's liquor (sizing).... here is a restoration of a museum frame.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=osgA22bc4ZY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ER7VnD9zB3s
Here on a less valuable piece is a quick and dirty method... I would have used gilder's paste which you can get an art store or on Amazon... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=osgA22bc4ZY very often if the whole frame was to have gold leaf applied, the base color was red, and then the gold applied over it and burnished https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n20LjkgcJOA
