Anchoring to the wall studs is your best bet. Since you're dealing with sheet rock, the studs should be easily located using a basic stud-finder tool. The cubby/shelf itself will need to have at least two or three (1'x1'x3' for example) lips attached (and similar attached to the wall at the studs) so that the cabby/shelf has a point of contact on which to rest/sit. Then screw the cabby itself into the stud.
You don't say what kind of back the shelf has. Maybe they expect you to use shelf brackets. There are plain or decorative ones. Just be sure the brackets are screwed into studs with heavy duty screws.
If you go to Lowe's and look at the drywall anchoring , there are weight specifications on them .
