How do I make pictures with sparklers?

So I had the kids in the neighborhood do the sparkler are with the lemon juice/water mix and the silhouette deer but the paper just burned - instead fo fractalling out like the video showed - any ideas on how to do this correctly?

you guys are the best - got the sparklers from Zurchers in the wedding section and sure enough, following the directions, burned right through everything - looks pretty and all the kiddos wanted to give these to parents as Christmas presents....bummer am at a loss but thanks anyhow!!!
