We probably need a little more information ! Do you want to decorate around it ? Or in its space ? You can put a variety of battery operated candles in or outside of the fireplace.
A picture sure would help - or at least more information as to what the fireplace and"small area" looks like. Are you wanting to put in a mantle? Add bookcases on the sides?

Please consider posting a photo. If we can see what you have to work with we will then be able to offer realistic suggestions on how you might be able to improve it. Myself I love the led flickering candles, they gice a nice glow to the mantle, my son and DIL place them inside the firebox.
Keep the accessories simple. Perhaps a few votives or a mirror on the mantel and that's it.
