Home Depot and paint stores carry the cleaning and painting supplies needed to paint stone fireplaces.
According to what I've read, angel stone is very porous and doesn't take paint well. I think it's very pretty! I would consult with a stone mason before trying to change its look myself.
I would check Ceylon spray paints, they're amazing now. Paint a base primer, then tape off and spray. Colors are wonderful too
If you do paint it please post the results
I would not use a spray paint inside unless you plan on covering every thing in sight with plastic. I painted my fireplace with a brush, and it didn't take that long.
Thinking your color choices (Gray, black) may be a bit severe and unless you were replacing the fireplace front; it would stand out more than you would like. Have you considered framing your mirror or even removing?
I agree with some others and would think twice about painting the stone. (Trust me it is awful to try to remove the paint if you don't like the look) I would think about painting the fireplace screen and getting a smaller framed mirror for over the mantle. By the way, your decorations for the holidays look great. What is on the floor in front of the fireplace? Marble? Also, I agree that black may be a bit severe for the mantle. Goood Luck
I know you asked this over 6 months ago, but the answer is yes. When I was a kid, almost everyone I knew had a painted one. The following link shows a successful job.

Here's another good one in gray like you specifically asked. I think this gray is really pretty. IMO I would keep away from a blue-gray, because it will look like the old crappy cement paint tone, that never looked like the real thing
BTW, she used very little paint, and it looks natural, not all fake and shiny: https://theinspiredroom.net/2016/04/26/paint-fireplace-a-diy-15-makeover/
