It would depend on the individual staircase. Mine is a straight run. My daughter has a landing on hers. However we both hang pictures that are "themed" Her's are mostly sepia colored Victorian prints. Mine are all portraits of women/girls heads. A couple are prints but mostly they are real paintings. They vary from a drawing of our then infant daughter to a print of Queen Victorian's eldest daughter. There are almost 30 of them and I just shift things around if need be when adding. I would suggest having a theme although of course that is not necessary,
I HAVE HAD SUCCESS WITH PICTURES being displayed on an angle "growing" up the stairwell. I have them all framed in a narrow black and age related "the oldest" to the most recent."
