I'm Linda. I'm wondering if your wick is in the candle or if you're trying to just test the wick before using? It might depend on the brand you're using because some wooden wicks will burn on their own and some need the wax smeared on the wick a little. I'd suggest contacting the manufacturer of the wooden wicks that you purchased to see what they recommend. I hope this helps you. Wishing you the best.
