Hi, any ideas on how I can tone down a an ornate oil painting frame; it is a large seascape. We need it to be more casual or a little more rustic.
Thanks

If you like the shabby chic or distressed look...you can lightly wipe down the frame with Linseed oil to remove the finish and paint to the look you like.

I would dry brush it with a little white paint. That will give it a more casual look. Let a little of the gold show through, and sand off any raised areas for a nice rustic look.

You could always sand it down a bit and paint it with color(s) that match your decor. Or remove the picture and insert a mirror instead. Hope this helps. Good luck.

You can paint with chalk paint, as well, which adheres well and distresses well.

I have used a dark brown or black glaze and rubbed it on a similar frame. Toned it down nicely.
