You could look at adding some trim pieces to the frame for embellishment...I would also be tempted to paint the frame white (a slightly different white than the walls, but looking for a two tone effect) and highlight the trim pieces with a dark glaze in the crevices.
Paint the frame a lighter color and dry brush it with gold or silver for an elegant look.
Without a photo it is hard to say, but I would paint the frame a color that coordinates with other items in the room, like your drapes or fabric on the sofa. I would also select picture frames in that same finish that ties the whole room together. Making your room elegant is a matter of simply having all of the elements look like they belong together.
i agree with the idea of painting the frame and addding silver or gold to enhance it.
Either add a wooden frame around it and stain or paint it, or Tile around it with either ceramic or mirror tiles, or Paste a Wallpaper Border round it.
Yep...John and Ana have the right idea...while the mirror makes things brighter, silver and/or gold would make it more elegant..I like Silver, myself, or a nice light colored latex paint...be sure and cover the entire mirror portion with newspaper and masking (Frogg) tape before you attempt to paint it..Also, do not use spray paint..You could also check out some of the lighter chalk paints that are on the market...good luck!
Gold is coming back and it would add elegance to your room. Use a small brush for painting
