Aw, that sounds really cute. Acrylic craft paints are safe and water washable if you clean up before it dries. Or you could go super safe and use the bottled paints they use in preschools. You'd want to seal it anyway, so it should work. If it were my dog, I would go with the acrylic craft paints - there are so many colors, and you can buy small bottles. But if you think your dog might take off across your white carpet mid-project, then maybe rethink it :-) Good luck, and please share your results with us - I can't wait to see what you do!!

any water based, non-toxic acrylic/latex craft paint works fine; just wash his paws well when you're done. Any paint 'for children' would be safe
I agree with the non-toxic paint comments. I would do it outdoors with a leash attached, unless you have a super calm dog.
