Hi Norma, Leather makes great handles. Try cutting up a belt for yours. Best of luck to you.
Rope makes good handles
Canvas straps like you use for upholstery work great. Here's a link: https://smile.amazon.com/Upholstery-Craft-Jute-Webbing-3-5/dp/B01M0IZEJX/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1520220821&sr=8-3&keywords=upholstery+supplies
old leather belt cut to fit; rope; drawer handles. depends on what tote is made of.
Leather is long lasting and easy to hold.
I think these, they are easy, but look a little more polished than run of the mill handles.

Use plastic placemats for the handles. If you buy them with rounded ends, just cut them out from each end and they will have the outer edges already hemmed. The raw edges can be sewn, Superglued, or hot glue sealed. Then firmly sew or staple the handles to the totes. If you want straight handles, just cut the placemats into strips the right length. Goodwill and Dollar Tree always have a variety. Have fun! ☺️
Heavy rope, old leather belts, and old chains.
