The difference between and desk and a shelf... is simply the distance from the front to the back (or wall)... Pinterest.com should have lots of ideas for fold away desks... and probably shelves as well... a "gate leg" support for the shelf can be decorative as well... or you could use ropes or chains to give support to the front edge
All I can say is that it would never work for me, because it would always be full of stuff!
