A mitre box is not expensive To purchase but you can use bullseye plinth blocks on the corners instead Only straight cuts will be required. Good luck
You can do this fairly easily using molding available at home imiprovement stores. Usually you can have them cut straight cuts for you either free or for a very nominal charge. Here's a link showing how to do it without using miter cuts. Hope it helps!

You can also purchase mirror framing kits online which come pre-cut. All you have to do is attach it to the mirror.
Home Depot , etc sell "corner" squares that eliminate the need for mitered corners. I have used these several times (and probably will again to frame windows, molding, and pictures. See this as am example. https://www.homedepot.com/p/3-4-in-x-3-in-x-8-ft-MDF-Fluted-Door-Casing-Set-4300/203818350
Use pool noodles and cut/carve them to your desire. Paint and glue on. You can easily cut your own miter with a kitchen knife.
