What type of glue or paste do I use to attach piece of fabric to wood?

I would like it to be removeable at a later time with no damage

I would try velcro that you can sew onto the fabric and stick onto the wood.

Removable? That’s like the opposite of the purpose of an adhesive. I would use one or more of these: Velcro dots and strips, glue sticks, low heat wax sticks, staples and tacks, 3M removable tape, (like yellow sticky note pads), double-stick tape, fabric glue, white glue. I could not guarantee that you would get a smooth removal, but these might be your best chances. Best wishes!

Soak the cloth in liquid starch. Wring out well. Stick and smooth out on the wood. It will peel off easily in the future.
