Karen: PAINT! ...just dust (and clean if necessary.). PRIME! ...then two coats of a good latex paint. Here's my paneling: (to the left of fireplace)

I painted one bedroom that was panelled on 2 walls. I cleaned with TSP, primed with Kilz Original, then 2 coats of Behr paint. It has held up beautifully for 20 years.

If you don't want to paint you can add mirrors, more lighting, pictures that are bright with light colors. Make sure your furniture isn't dark as well.

Agreed paint is definitely the way to go. Make sure and clean them thoroughly first before priming and then painting. Old paneling gets really icky over the years.

  • Paint is the easiest way. Kathy's got some great tips there -- don't skip the cleaning or the priming, and get a separate primer from the paint.
