Vertical everything, art, tall plants, mirrors. Use furniture with legs showing, no skirts. Vertical board and batten on the walls.

    Lighter paint colors help.

Avoid horizontal trim boards at the top of the wall.

Using smaller furnishings can visually enlarge a room.

      Hmm.

I really need a color pop. What about the idea I have of leaving the top 12 inches of the room white and below that, my favorite mood color, say burnt mandarin?

Paint the walls a very light color and the ceiling white. Light colored furniture will help, too. Bright colored pillows will make all of the light colors really pop. Be sure the light colors are also in the pillows.

Instead of painting all of the walls, how about just one, maybe the one behind the headboard of the bed? Try keeping the others light and get a quilt with all of the colors (walls, window treatments, etc) in it. With a print quilt, I would get different size and different solid color throw pillows to go with it.

Vertical stripes! Did this in bathroom of prior house- WOW, it worked, I thought. They were monochromatic stripes, 2 tones darker/deeper than the wall color, but enough to know they were there. The vertical trick the eye into thinking the wall is much taller.
