If it's in the direct vicinity of a water area where it will get splashed then you definately need to use cement board or Duroc. If it's an area that's not in contact with a lot of water I would still use a 'mol though' gypsum. Usually it's a green colored drywall sheet, though the manufacturer's are always improving these materials. Bathrooms are notorious for moisture build up for obvious reasons! So investing in these materials are always worth it rather than cutting corners just to do it again later on. I personally would use mold tough gypsum everywhere wher the cement board was not used.
