How can I lay new hardwood floors in my home?

My floors are original to the home and they are worn. I had them refinished 10 years ago but the top coat on my floors are peeling/chipping around the edges. There are some spots that are rough and could cause splinters. I also have 2 dogs that are hard on the floors as well. I need waterproof, pet and child proof flooring, HELP!! I also have a grandson on the way.

You want new hardwood floors, but you want them to be porcelain tile. Sorry, I'm being facetious, but porcelain tile is waterproof and scratch proof, and now it is being made to look like wood. However, because it is tile, the length of pieces is limited. You can lay new wood flooring over your existing floors. Just be sure to stack the flooring inside your home for at least a week to acclimate to humidity before beginning installation. Otherwise it may swell or shrink in the weeks following. It can go down right over the original flooring. Durability is provided by the sealer. Oil-based polyurethane is the most durable user-friendly sealer, followed by water-based polyurethane.
