How do I cover a "popcorn" ceiling w/out removing the present surface?

    It isn’t hard to remove the popcorn, it’s just messy. Spray it with water, let it soak a bit, then scrape it off. It isn’t a strong surface to attach anything to. The only way to avoid removing it is to create a new ceiling below it.

    Plaster over it .I would not remove it you really don't know what it is covering up. It could be asbestos as well all depending how old it is so check first to see if it is okay. I removed mine on the ceiling and I thought that covering it with heavy duty lining paper would cover all the imperfections but it doesn't my next job is to wallpaper it with an anaglipter wallpaper to see if this sorts it out. I just wanted a lovely smooth ceiling to clean instead of it ripping all the cloths up. If I could of afforded it I would of had every one of my popcorn ceilings plastered over .

    Bead board over it, or new modern styrofoam tiles, are out there.
