You could put a sign, depending on your style. Farmhouse, Cute, Funny, etc.. You might have to make it or commission it if you can't find one you like.
Thanks the problem is that I use a walker and throw rugs are such a trip hazard for me. A sign was suggested and I think that will work. Appreciate the comment. Did learn a good lesson about having a different floor color but I am not sure that will be enough for us seniors.
The colors need to be different so that people can see. If the floor is light, paint the stair dark and vice versa. I missed my bottom step so many times because the color was similar. So I changed it.

I went to my local hardware store and got a yellow and black caution tape, and put it on the edge of the steps down.
