Try drilling smaller holes in the floor trim first.

I would suggest pre drilling holes if you are nailing. But save yourself a ton of time and get a pneumatic nail gun andnail with thin nails. The air gun shoots the nails in super fast and just touch up with colored wood putty

I pre drill it with a very small drill bit ,then I just load the holes with the brads & go right along with the hammer, hope this helps.
Many years ago I learned to blunt the tip of the nail with a hammer just before hammering it into place. As long as you are not on the edge of the piece of wood there is no splitting. When you have to nail into a lapped or mitered joint then you night want to predrill a hole.
