Is there A way to make grout lines to look smaller?

When we bought our house 3yrs. ago someone had just put in new tile in the guest bathroom. Well,,the colors we like and the accent colors and the pattern we like also. But the grout, oh my! The tiles are 4"x4" and the grout lines are1/2". It matches but really looks bad and it is floor to ceiling on three walls, so we do not want to tear out what is already there. Why they made the grout lines so big is beyond me, plus the grout is A different color where the most water hits it. So any and all advice on how to make the lines appear smaller is very much appreciated. Thanks :)
