Yellowish stains from rug backing on vinyl floor - Help!

After I installed new vinyl flooring in my house twelve years ago, I, of course, put down throw rugs in front of the sink and in the bathrooms and a 5x7 rug in the living room. The vinyl has turned yellowish and I am wondering if there is any way to restore it to its original color. Thanks, Hometalkers

Sorry to say, Glorus, there isn’t much you can do at this point. The rubber backing on the rugs is the culprit.

Because vinyl and rubber don’t mix, it creates a chemical reaction and causes the vinyl to actually turn yellow.

Also, other things can react and cause stains. Be careful when placing items like flowerpots, rubber wheels, anything made of plastic, etc., on a vinyl floor.

When buying rugs, look for tags labeled “nonstaining rubber backing,” or stay away from rubber-backed rugs on vinyl or linoleum floors, as experts recommend.

I agree with Molly. There really isn’t anything, in my opinion, that you can do except keep those areas covered with carpeting.

If you badly want to remove the carpeting and have the vinyl uncovered, you MIGHT want to try mixing a solution of water with bleach and test it in one area that doesn’t show up too much and, of course, isn’t in an area where you walk often.

To “test” it, it would mean you‘d have to let the solution sit on top of a discolored area say, for an hour or two then mop it up. Then check and see if it made any difference. You might have to keep trying this for a few days and if no change is seen, forget the “testing”.

Naturally, you can’t do this with children and pets walking around!

I’m not ready to give up so quickly with your yellow flooring! Couple things you can try! Get a floor polish stripper and try that! I’d also give a steamer with the floor polish stripper together scrubbing it with the hot steam! You may get lucky, nothing to loose trying but a little money. Steam cleaners by bissel are not too expensive to buy if you don’t own one? Worse case sneered, you can put new vinyl over your existing flooring in most cases and if your kitchen isn’t too large (12’x12’) you can lay a new sheet of flooring in one piece with no seems! DependI get on your kitchen lay out it can be a fairly simple job to do

Try Spick and Span. Also try Sudsey Ammonia.

In the hopes it a coating that turned yellow, I would try the ammonia on the yellowed areas..... ammonia will remove any wax, sealer on there. Otherwise I am sorry to say its permanent, but if the vinyl is still manufactured, you may be able to replace the damaged areas....you could even pick a new contrasting vinyl and make vinyl rugs in those spots.
