How do you store Canna bulbs over the winter??

My Canna's are in a pot now. Can I cut them down and store the pot with the dirt and bulbs still in it, or do I have to take them out of the dirt?

I usually cut mine back as they wither. Don't like the look of the dead spikes in the flower bed. They still come back every year. Hope this helps.
