If it is Red dirt It is Not dirt its' red mild red clay dirt it needs a lot of amendment to soften the soil, neutral ph is what you want compost known as gardeners gold will help the most , i.e black gold will help, start with that , Good luck. Tim, Tr.
I live in central Oklahoma and I know the red clay well. As Tim said just now you really do have to amend the soil, as the water does not penetrate it and in the hot summers the clay will become hard as rock. You can have compost delivered and also top soil and mix that together in your garden beds. I have had good luck with daylilies and mums (chrysanthemums) in the full sun areas as well as lantana. Hostas will grow on the north side of my house. I would check on the internet for other flowers and shrubs that are native plants to Oklahoma and to your zone as there is more than one zone in Oklahoma. Hope this helps.

Asters and cone flowers do just fine in clay dirt
I live in the Tulsa area on a tall hill. So needless to say all the good soil is down at my neighbors yard, lol! I found digging up all the area you want to plant in and replacing it with good garden soil, mixed with sand, peat moss, perlite and some cow manure (just a little goes a long way). I have redone 4 areas at the house I use to live at. Probably 4' x 20' each. Took some time but everything I planted was happy! Hope this helps!
I Love this and I will be doing this one. I've been looking at many DIY Fireplace makeovers and finally found the one perfect for me and my space. Thank you so much for sharing your time and Talent ❤️😊.
