Roses should be pruned in late winter or early spring when they are dormant
I trim my Knockout roses at the end of the fall, right before the first frost. I trim them WAY back and they come back with a vengeance in the spring. For each branch I cut back, more branches sprout in the spring.
My grandmother always had a beautiful rose garden around her home. Every day she would go and pinch off the old buds off the roses, which she makes them grow more. Trimming them in the spring and fall, taking some of those branches and sicking them into the ground and putting a glass jar over them. It did not take long for that branch to take adding another plant.
I have knock-out roses & I trim them all summer. Now is the time for the big trim. Cut them back bigger than a basketball. They will come back healthy & full. Don't be afraid to cut these knock-outs, they can take it.
Always deadhead throughout sesson, go down to where you see 5 leaves, snip in front of that..then in fall do what everyone else has said.
Knock out roses are different than regular roses
Trim them in late February/early March. There is a great video on Proven Winner website showing you how and when to trim them.
