My mother always said to trim in spring. I followed her example and my bushes always looked wonderful. For my hibiscus, I preferred them shaped as a tree rather then a bush. My driveway was lined with them. -

I wouldn't cut them back till spring or at least after the weather is too cold for the pruning to promote new growth. -
