Make sure the pot is large enough for the plant or plants. It must have drainage holes.Fill the pot with garden soil for vegetables half way.Place the plants in the pot,if they are to deep add more soil ,plant them on a angle burying the roots.Water enough till it runs through the pot. Tomatoes need six to eights hours of sun.
Hydro for tomatoes is also awesome, which means planting them so they grow upside down and vine downward. And yes plenty of sun and water.
Also remember that plants in pots need more fertilizing as they go thru the nutrients in the pot a lot faster. And you need a good support system in the pot---should probably put it near something stable that you could also connect the growing plant---and it is okay to prune the top of the plant to keep it from getting too tall. Just don't wait too long to do that as it gets taller.
Make sure you use a stake or a cage and water quite a bit also use a large pot so it has plenty of room
