Is there something wrong with them?

If they are well cared for and kept shaped up, they could last a long, long, time. They may start looking straggly as they get older, especially from the bottom and you may want to replace them at that point just to make things look better.

think 'Sequoia' or 'Bristle Cone Pine' --- some can live thousands of years -- BUT, in the home garden, many may get too large, or begin to 'age' sooner than that! 28 is not 'old'.... if it is looking 'shopworn', you may want to consider having an Arborist take a look and advise pruning, feeding, etc. Your local Agricultural Agent can give you the name of a CERTIFIED Arborist ... not just someone that has a 'tree trimming' business ---

They can last for many, many years as long as they get the water they require. They can be pruned also.
