Plant them in soil that has had some peat added to it, so the top of the bulb is at ground level. I mulch mine with about a foot of pine straw in the winter. They come up every year and multiply like crazy! In early spring you might want to dig them up and separate the babies. If you are way up north (I am in Arkansas) you may have to dig them up in the winter and set back out in early spring. Mine only have afternoon sun. The leaves get enormous so don't try to plant anything else in that bed!
You don't say where you live, but they are not very cold hardy and may need to be dug up each year. When I planted my bulbs, they had me plant them deep, but they always ended up coming up to the surface anyway, on their own. I think the directions were for three to four inches down from the tip, but they all came up to the surface in the soft new soil and ended up with a lot of surface roots. I just love them, I planted mine in huge half wine barrels because I know I have to dig them and my coleus up each fall.
Most bulbs should be planted down at least 4-6 inches. Plant when the weather warms up sometime in late April or May.
Do not plant outside until your area is free of any frost....https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/bulbs/elephant-ear/growing-elephant-ear-plants.htm
