I have a plant that I can't identify. Anyone know what this is?

We bought a house in January, this spring, some "weeds" were growing in our rocks, which don't get much sun, mostly shade, we went on vacation, and some of the "weeds" were blooming when I got home. (was glad I hadn't thrown these out, like the others), No one seems to know what this is... they flower, The "seeds" or whatever are growing, look like green pussy willows.. Thanks. Carolyn H
I wonder if anyone can identify this pretty flowering plant?
The plant has sort of like pussy willow sacks like seed packets in the middle of it.
Please tell me if you can identify this plant, I would appreciate it. My good friends who know a lot about plants, have never seen this one.

Another question, the seed pods are still green, but the plants got zapped last night, it got down in the 30 degree range, I think 34 to be exact, are the seeds going to be ok? Or will they come back? Thanks
    • Luis Luis on Oct 22, 2013
@Carolyn when you open the pods if the seeds are black or dark brown then they are ok if they are still green they will not germinate, the best way to know when you press the pod with your fingers it should pop open

actually, the pods are opening, and the seeds are sort of tan or brown, is that ok? Thanks.

I would love to add these to my garden. thank you!!

We also call them 'touch me nots'.....because the seed pods pop open when you touch them.

actually, these came up volunteer in our rock out infront of the house, mostly shady area, but sun in the afternoon, facing West of the house...it was weird, I thought they were weeds, and pulled most of them, before realizing they are flowers. Thankfully, someone from Georgia identified them as Balsam Flowers, if you look them up on Google, it tells all about them. I had a lot of seed pods, and they are opening, so I brought some of them in to dry, will try planting them next spring.

  • Debbie Frantz Debbie Frantz on Oct 25, 2013
You can ususally buy seeds in the spring and then they will self seed and come up volunteer. Or buy the plants at a nursery and you will have lots of seeds after blooming!

Yup, it's balsam for sure. lots of butterflies like so when it reseeds in my garden and it's in an okay spot it stays. Otherwise it comes up easily enough and gets pitched on the compost pile. It's really a pretty flower.
