I have tried twice to enter an answer. I keep getting cut off when I am almost finished. Sorry.
Avacados, as you probably know, are tropical. You may get a nice plant but will probably never get any fruit that far north (just not enough light). To start a seed, immerse the root end in clean water in a bright window and wait for the roots to start growing and a shoot to come out the top. Try to keep the water level the same by adding a bit every few days. Check the internet for more ideas.
they will only be a house plant for your location.
Avocados grow on BIG trees. Can't imagine them doing well in a planter. Also they are tropical, like southern Florida
The way many people start Avocado is to stick 4 tooth picks around the middle of the seed and then place in a mason jar full of water so the seed is half in and half out of the water. Put it on a window sill and let nature take its course. You'll see roots forming and a sprout appearing on the top, but not overnight be patient. Good luck and have fun doing it.
