    1. One of the most important things with Rhubarb is to choose a site that is well drained, fertile and where it will get hopefully full sunlight. If your soil isn't fertile then adding compost to it will work well. You will one at least a year old crown of Rhubarb (so purchase a plant at the nursery instead of planting by seed). The best time to plant it is in the Spring as soon as you can work the ground. If you go the plant route instead of seed route you should be able to harvest your Rhubarb next year. If you go the seed route you won't be able to harvest it for a good 3 years.

Just plant in good soil. the plant grow for a season before cutting any stalks. Also cut the flower stem if any sprout. Cover with mulch in the fall to keep the roots from freezing. In spring add some fertilizer around the drip zone to help the plant to grow

I live in central Indiana. My rhubarb plants turned black with gooey leaves X3 planting efforts. Purdue University says it is in my soil and I can never expect to have success. Tried container growing and that made no difference. Good luck....you will know the first season. Usually very easy to grow.

If you're worried about your soil, you can take a sample to your local nursery to test and tell you for sure!
