Florida is such a diverse state, Sheryll, that what grows in Jacksonville we may never see 100 miles south here in New Smyrna, and I'm afraid I don't recognize this. If you're not too far away, I suggest you take a cutting to the extension office on McDuff. Or call them and see if you can e-mail a photo: (904)255-7450. Then please let us know!

Sheryll, Some people call this Indian Cane. Also known as Heart-wing Sorrel, Polygonaceae (Buckwheat Family) Rumex hastatulus Baldw. As a kid we picked the stems and chewed them. They have a sour taste.

Thank you, David. The University of Florida extension service calls it a weed, but I guess that's all about perception. It's apparently somewhat poisonous, so good thing you didn't eat too much when you were a kid. http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/fw036

I never knew the name of the plant before but I grew up chewing on the stems too. From what i read, a little doesn't hurt anything, a lot will bind calcium.

As a children in Jacksonville (we won't discuss how long ago that was), we chewed it. We called it sour weed! Kids love the sour taste!

Yes, same here Dianne. And not a one of us ever got the least bad feeling from just chewing on the stems.... we did not eat it. And thanks to everyone for the help. I grew up thinking it was a Florida Wildflower.... weed huh? I really like them, but pulled them up so the city would not fuss about them.

Weird, colder weather here again late this morning. But why should I be surprised. Finally decided it was safe to take my electric blanket off the bed and not so sure of this now.......... going to put it back again.... lol lol lol.

Sorry your city has THAT kind of people, since Sorrel is food for both butterfly and moth lavae, which of course are all becoming endangered (Thanks evil Monsanto!) Wiki' didn't mention bees, but I bet they like it too. Apparently it has very deep roots, so with any luck, yours will come again.

I so agree with you Linda T, it is a shame how much big brother is watching us now....... but I think I see a change a coming........ yes, I do..... these folks with the idea that a perfecting green St. Augustine lawn are losing battle I think. And don't get me wrong, I love those perfect green lawns....... I just don't care to do them myself. I try to please, but I can draw the line with pesticides oversprayed onto my own body one time, then by tiny fur baby got sprayed in the eyes by my next door neighbors lawn service with me watching........ I called the service, cause she is helpless, but next time it might have to be the police..... hurt me, maybe you get away, hurt my babies and I will fight back.
