If I cut the top off of a coconut palm will the tree die?

This is in western Mexico, the palm is 25-30 feet tall. The fronds are ugly when they turn brown and take 6 -12 months to fall off. In the meantime ripe cocnuts are falling down. One hit my forearm once, lucky I didn't get a broken arm. I'm afraid for our safety as well as my kitty cats! If a coconut falls 20 plus feet down, he could be killed. The tree does provide some shade but I'd rather be safe! The tree is smack in the middle of our walled in courtyard

It will die if you cut the top off. Decide if you want to keep it, than just trim. It will continue to grow even if you keep the fronds trimmed.

    Hire tree trimmers

We have lots of these in FL. The tree will die, but the stump will take a while to rot, meanwhile it will be an ugly, decaying mess. Your best bet is to hire someone to remove it. If you insist on DIY, trim it from the top down, in pieces small enough to handle. The root stump can be easily removed with a shovel but it will take some elbow grease. If you rent, be sure you have permission to do this
