My new apple tree died, or so I thought. Shoots coming up from base.

It was a new tree last year but rabbits ate bark in winter and it didn't make it. Now 3 shoots are coming up from the base. We cut the tree down to a foot, can we take the strongest shoot, cut the others away and that will be our tree? They are healthy and growing straight. I did protect from bunnies now with chicken wire.

Yes you can give this a try. I did the same thing when I moved in to my house 19 years ago. There was a random twig growing in the back yard and my neighbor said to keep,it. It's now a lovely Haralson apple tree. Just have patience. If you have questions about growing apple trees, the U of M Landscape Arboretum is a wonderful resource and not too terribly far from you. Here are the trees for comparison. The younger is on the right.

You have nothing to lose, however do you have another apple tree in the yard for cross pollination?

@Doreen Well hopefully it works for you. Wish I could find a decent honey crisp apple. Hopefully in time you will have tasty apples.

Depends if it was a grafted tree. If it was it will only grow the root stock which is often crab apple. If it wasn't grafted, let it grow.

Do all apple trees send out root suckers, or just crab apple? Our non-fruiting crab apple tree died a couple years back and we finally got tired of all the root suckers and took it out this spring.

@MN Mom Thanks! Have noticed some trees in our yard (or neighbor's yard) send out suckers from the roots, but many do not. We had a Hornbeam tree planted by a nursery so was under warranty when it died. They didn't honor the warranty, but we have a "double" tree now from the roots. Gives us and our neighbors a nice privacy screen.

I had two small apple trees girded by mice/voles one winter. Now all my fruit trees have a wire cage around their trunks. I make sure the wire doesn't stick into the tree and I enlarge the cage as the trunk grows. It is heartbreaking to lose a 10 to 15 year old tree when a shield of some sort can protect it. Lesson learned.
