Rhubarb patch died. Any ideas why?

I have had 5 hills of rhubarb for many years. Last summer half way through the 5 hills started drying up and looking bad. Some stalks came back this Spring but did not make it. Any ideas why, I didn't think much of anything would kill out rhubarb.
