Tomatoes require six to eight hours of sun. Just use a good standard garden soil for tomatoes like Miracle grow.

    Tomato loves partial shade.

My herbs and one large pot of peppers and one large pot of tomatoes get about four to maybe five hours of afternoon sun and do well, I would say just as well as the ones in the garden, just a little smaller in size and give abundantly in the produce area.

Forgot to comment on the soil. For my big pots I use 1/3 top soil, 1/3 good peat moss, 1/3 potting soil. For the smaller pots I us half to 1/3 peat moss and the rest potting soil.
